DEVELOPING YOUR PHOTOGRAPHIC VOICE

Here is what, between us we will be basing your stay here on:

Participants will be asked to bring some work (approximately 20 images) to show as examples of where they are photographically.
Through discussion with the tutors and the group each participant will be encouraged to develop the strongest aspects of their work and focus on their own individual style.
Practical photographic exercises and assignments will be followed up by looking at how rigorous editing can dramatically enhance a body of work and how it can enable the photographer to have a sense of their own voice in the images.
Througout the week we will be looking at the history of photography and participants will be encouraged to identify and analyse particular photographers of their choice, helping them to learn new ways of looking and seeing that will become apparent in their own work.
The aim of the workshop is that each participant should produce a set of coherent images that are of a publishable standard. They should also have the confidence and the inspiration to continue to work and develop their own photographic voice.

Based in the beautiful village of Mindya, in the foothills of the Balkans in Veliko Turnovo Province, central Bulgaria, these 5 night workshops are open to photographers of all levels who have a desire to take their photography on to the next stage and get out of their comfort zones.

Mindya - Portrait of a Village I began a photographic project in Mindya to raise money for the village community centre, which culminated in an exhibition during the prestigious month of photography at Photosynthesis Gallery in Sofia in November 2016. This is your chance to meet the villagers, too. You can see some of the photography here .

Why Bulgaria? I hear you ask,,,

I’ll be honest with you. When we first bought the house here I couldn’t even point at it on a map, but it was affordable, I was in love and we wanted somewhere we could run away to and play ‘house’ with the kids.

I genuinely never expected that I would live here, let alone that I would fall in love with the place, it’s traditions, it’s history, it’s natural beauty, it’s food and it’s delicious, little known wines.

Yet, several years later, here I am. And yes, loving it…

So why should you join me here on one of my photographic workshops? Well, bearing in mind that one of my mantras is ‘You’ll never improve as a photographer by taking the same picture over and over again’, and my insistence that we all need to get out of our comfort zones and push ourselves, it really is the ideal place. The interior of the country, where I live near the beautiful city of Veliko Turnovo (the ancient capital) is a little known paradise in the heart of the Balkans. We will spend our time eating (and photographing) delicious home-cooked food, drinking some of the best wines you will have tasted, visiting local markets, wineyards, towns and villages. Seeing local monasteries full of 11th century frescoes. Shooting and learning at my lovely village home and benefiting from my 40 years experience as a professional photographer.
