B U L G A R I A
VELIKO TURNOVO DISTRICT & MINDYA VILLAGE
SEPTEMBER 2017 dates to be confirmed. Please contact me for details
Based in the beautiful village of Mindya, where I live in the foothills of the Balkans in Veliko Turnovo Province, central Bulgaria, these 5 night workshops are open to photographers of all levels who have a desire to take their photography on to the next stage and get out of their comfort zones.
Like all the workshops I run, these are a ‘hands-on’ experience. I firmly believe that showing someone how to achieve something is a lot more effective than telling them. To this end, I will be shooting and working alongside you the whole time.
Make no mistake, you will be thrown in at the deep-end! Surrounded by things to shoot and by stunningly beautiful countryside, we will immerse you in a photographer’s paradise. Beautiful surroundings, comfortable and authentic accommodation and wonderful food and delicious wines are paramount, alongside friendly and informative tuition.
Join me in my village and my home and meet and photograph some of the residents and traditions of the beautiful area I live in. I have been working on a photographic project in Mindya to raise money for the village community centre culminating in an exhibition during the prestigious month of photography at Photosynthesis Gallery in Sofia in November 2016 entitled 'MINDYA-PORTRAIT OF A VILLAGE'. This is your chance to meet the villagers and photograph them. You can see some of the photography HERE
Accomodation is in the recently refurbished TERRA HOUSE owned by my lovely friends Mira & Benzo. They are charming and fascinating people, Benzo is a potter, and has a workshop and a kiln at Terra House and is an amazing cook and Mira runs one of the biggest cosmetic companies in the Balkan region. All rooms at Terra House are en suite and it also houses Bulgaria’s first MUSEUM of COMMUNISM…a unique and fascinating experience!
The days tend to be broken up into shooting in the mornings and computer work in the afternoons. The exact itinerary may change slightly, but this is a rough guide of what we will be doing…
DAY 1 - Departure from London Gatwick on Easy Jet flight at 06.10 am. Met at Sofia airport and transported to Mindya village, stopping for lunch en route.
4.30 approx. Arrival in Mindya.
P.M. Welcome meal with tasting of Bulgarian wines at Restaurant Han Hadji Nikoli in Veliko Turnovo.
DAY 2– A.M. Like all of my travel shoots...we start in the market. Veliko Turnovo Central Pazaar. A fascinating place, full of small producers and packed with photographic potential. We then move on to the fascinating ‘Old Town’ with it’s craftsmen quarter.
Lunch in the nearby village of Arbanassi followed by afternoon of processing/ computer work/Lightroom tutorial in my office in the village.
P.M. Home cooked Bulgarian meal at Terra House.
DAY 3 – Whole day at my home in the village of Mindya. We will shoot both in the village and in my house, focussing on the people and architecture of the village. We will have a home cooked lunch and in the afternoon concentrate on reviewing, editing and processing the images from the last two days.
P.M. Home cooked Bulgarian meal at Terra House
DAY 4 - Visit to the nearby historic wooden town of Elena, famous for it’s hams and cheeses. We will meet and photograph some of the producers and later in the morning visit the up and coming Maryan winery (and have a tasting!) a light lunch in Elena, then back to Mindya. In the afternoon, alongside editing and reviewing your photos, there will be a chance for some ‘one to one’ time with me to talk through any specific queries you may have about your work. We will also discuss subjects such as picture editing. story building and portfolio presentation.
P.M. Home cooked meal at Terra House.
DAY 5 – A trip to the Roman city of Nicopolis ad Istrum. An amazing site to photograph as one is able to wander amongst Roman ruins alone and without supervision, and a visit to what, for me is the most photogenic place in the whole region, the amazing and highly colourful Preobazhenski Monastery. A late light lunch followed by an afternoon of reviewing pictures/processing and a general ‘wrap up’ of what you have achieved on the workshop.
In the evening there will be a farewell dinner at our favourite restaurant in Arbanassi.
DAY 6 – 07.00 You will be transported back to Sofia for the 12.00 flight back to Gatwick.
PLEASE NOTE: All breakfasts will be at Terra House and will consist of traditional Bulgarian fare. If you have any dietary restrictions, please inform us well in advance.
